Sibiu is the capital of Sibiu County. The city and its surroundings are one of the most visited areas in Romania, and its historic center is one of the best-preserved historical locations in the country.

What you can visit:

• Brukenthal Palace in Piata Mare, built in 1777-1787 by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, in the late Baroque style. The building became the headquarters of the Brukenthal Museum, the first museum in Romania, opened to the public in 1817. Now you can visit the group of museums located here, starting with the baron's collections of European art, stamps, numismatics, and books, the Brukenthal Palace, the Museum of Natural History, The Museum of Arms and Hunting Trophies, The Museum of Pharmacology, the Altemberger House History Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
• The historical center of Sibiu, the largest medieval urban complex in the country, with numerous vestiges preserved from that period. Go to the Council Tower, the symbol of the city of Sibiu, cross the Bridge of Lies, the first cast iron bridge in Romania.
• The ASTRA National Museum Complex, an open-air museum in Dumbrava Sibiului, which presents the traditional civilization on the territory of Romania. There are over 400 buildings of wood, stone and brick reconstructed here to illustrate daily life in ancestral Romanian villages.
• The Paltinis mountain resort, located 32 km from Sibiu, is the first mountain resort in Romania (established in 1894) and is located at the highest altitude in Romania (1442m).
